Eat Drink Groove - G Night

"The dying process begins the minute we are born, but it accelerates during dinner parties." ~Carol Matthau

G Night:   Here's the way G Night Works, every 3rd Saturday of the month a group of couples get together to eat & drink. The guys do all the cooking/planning the women sit back and enjoy. Each meal is judged based on taste, presentation and the wine pairing (with one bonus point for creativity.)The women judge, the men cook and everybody has fun... I think? Each G Night we present the winner of the event with the G Night Chef's coat and then that couple gets to be the host of the next event. The result?... well come to the next G Night and find out.

The next GNight will be held on TBA in November?... details to follow

October Winner: Chuck e Cheese - with his mussels
ok, so as they said in witches of eastwick... "something's gonna change I can feel it." Ok maybe it came from somewhere else but that cherry scene was awsome in that movie. Mike and Ger hosted this event in their newly finished house of which many people commented on the paint around the rear door and whether or not they had hired a professional just for that section. Anyway - we're moving to Vancouver. Yes all things come to an end and living in Calgary is one of them. We're sad to say it, we're going to miss everyone and especially on nights like what appears to have been one hell of a party judging by the inaugural Gnight sleep-over and the last picture in this bunch. Looks like it was fun! Pictures - Click Here!

August/September Winner: Mike Guy - Asparagus wrapped in proscuitto with wasabi glaze
Whew, what a party. Everyone was there... well not everyone because 1/2 of the hosts were absent. Yes Motorcycle Mike and Tamara offered to host as the Hazeltons have just won too many times and weren't interested but Mike was away and Tamara did a great job of throwing a party. Mike probably wishes he was here as his very expensive "shit" camera was in full use. Three rolls of film and 4 batteries later we were still going! Proscuitto was the theme last night - 3 of the 4 dishes contained it and the girls were drinking water by the end of the night, some at least. I'm not saying goodbye to M&G in this post because not only were they still around for this GNight, they're hosting the next one. They say it's the last one but we're planning a little side bet. Pictures Coming Soon!

July Winner: Jason Hazelton - It was so long ago I can't remember.
Charles and Arden agreed that we could enter the house provided we did not use any type of food projectile in the kitchen. Another fantastic night, and the details remain a bit fuzzy. Did anyone take pictures?

June Winner: Charles Warren - Parmesan Crusted Quesadilla with Guacamole
Now when I said we'd be on better behavior next GNight, I didn't expect it to be back at Charles and Arden's place so soon. Chucky impressed the girls yet again with his culinary prowess. The event took place outside (finally it stopped raining) on a beautiful summer night. We brought out the flashlight to help BBQ and for some reason we did shots of Saki although I don't remember a dish containing it. Good Times. We love you Mike and Geraldine and hope you have a fantastic safe journey. (hey you never know, we might see you at the next GNight :) Click Here for Pictures of the event

May Winner: Jason Stainton - Sea Bass with Prosciutto wrapped Asparagus
Wow! What a party. Who knew 6 guys in one kitchen could make such a mess? I should have known it was ball game over when someone suggested we didn't need wine glasses and we began drinking from the bottle. Sorry to our gracious hosts Arden and Charles, the next time we'll be on better behavior. Click Here for Pictures of the event

April Winner: Charles Warren - Thai Curry Shrimp
April's event was hosted by Jeremy and Ingrid, being one huge room we impressed the ladies with our cooking abilities all evening with the possible exceptions of frequent safety meetings on the deck. Click Here for Pictures of the event

March Winner: Jeremy Peesker - Rosemary Garlic Sirloin
The Fifth GNight was held at Tamara & Mike's and I understand the new couch hadn't quite made it in time. Michelle and I couldn't attend this GNight as we were back in Ontario... that's two in a row. I don't like this - there are now people that are a part of GNight I haven't met... what's with that?? :) Hope everyone had a great time, I don't have much to say about the event for the reason mentioned in the line above, however I do have the pics of the event with commentary from the lovely Geraldine. Congrats Jeremy and we look forward to the next one!! Click Here for Pictures of the event

February Winner: Mike McGillivray - Brie with Caramelized Onions
The Fourth GNight was held at Jason & Kim Hazelton's place due to the fact that Mike and Ger were moving in the next day and that Ali and Dave were moving out the next day. First off - We'll miss you Ali and Dave! Please stay in touch and if you want to e-mail me pics of your GNight in Toronto I'll put them on the site. Michelle and I am very sorry to have missed the event and that said given Jason Hazelton's glazed eyes and limited memory of the night before I only know minor details of the evening. I understand there were Scallops, someone did beef with sweet potato fries and the winner was Mike with baked brie topped with caramelized onions. Thanks for the in depth briefing Jason. Congrats Mike, we look forward to you guys hosting the next event provided you have furniture by then! We won't miss the next one!! Click Here for Pictures of the event

January Winner: Dave Porter - Grilled Chicken wrapped in Buffalo Proscuitto
The Third GNight was held at Dave and Ali's place due to construction delays at the "Guy" house. Mike and Geraldine added the much needed flare to the coveted coat and the chefs were ready to compete. All the food entries were fantastic, Jason started with Hoisen Pork Crepes, then Dave with the winning dish of Grilled Chicken wrapped in Buffalo Proscuitto, followed by Jeremy with a Wild Mushroom and Truffle Flatbread, Mike G. with Grilled Pork and Pear skewers and last but not least Mike M. with Thai Chicken Satays with Peanut Sauce. It was very close but Dave came out ahead by 1/2 a point and earned the job of host for the next event. (likely to be deferred to another location due to moving) Click Here for Pictures of the event

December Winner: Mike Guy - Coconut Curry Prawns
The second Gnight was another great success! The hosts, Kim & Jason managed to unveil the new Gnight logo on the ceremonial chef's coat which was worn by Jason for the night until the official "handing off" process. All the food entries were fantastic and this time Mike Guy put together a perfect execution of Coconut Curry Prawns taking home the coat. It was tough competition but a well deserved outcome - Geraldine and Mike will be our first hosts in the new year. Stay tuned for details. Happy Holidays Everyone! November Winner: Postponed!

October Winner: Jason Hazelton - Seared Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Butter
The first ever Gnight took place on October 21st, 2005. The inaugural event went off without a hitch and although we made the rules up as we went along the results were fantastic. Jason and Michelle were the hosts for the first event and unveiled the Gnight "trophy" for the night which is an authentic chef's coat to be awarded to the winner of each event and also worn by that host the next time. Jason Hazelton took away the coat this night with his Seared Ahi Tuna in Wasabi Butter entry and will be the host of the next event. Click Here for Pictures of the event
